My friends and I decided to take a trip down to Cabo San Lucas, Mexico for our last undergraduate spring break back in April 2016. We spent our four days keeping distance from the typical college crowd and explored the city with Cabo Adventures.
Day 3 | Swimming with Whale Sharks
This was #handsdown my favorite experience in open water. Born and raised on a tropical island, I’m naturally drawn to the ocean. It’s always been on my bucket list to dive with sharks, so I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to swim with the largest known species. Words cannot describe the humbling experience being alongside these gentle giants.
After a 2 hour drive from Cabo San Lucas to La Paz, Mexico, we arrived at our destination, the city’s Malecon. We stored our belongings in designated lockers and geared up with the appropriate snorkeling equipment. We divvied up into smaller boats and cruised off into the Sea of Cortés.
Unless the sharks are feeding they generally swim at a much faster pace, so don’t be surprised by the strong push and pull currents. If you don’t have previous experience snorkeling, then you may struggle a bit to keep up. Although none of the whale sharks we encountered were feeding, we were fortunate enough to spot two of different ages – a baby about 15 ft and one a bit older somewhere between 25-30 ft.
Can you believe they grow even larger as adults?
“We’re about the size of its tail!”
After a few hours of chasing dreams, we were back on the boardwalk where the Cabo Adventures Crew had a delicious lunch buffet ready. On our drive back, we also took a pit stop by the famous Hotel California.
